Mountaintop Poem

Sacred Mountain

ann e krueger 2000
Dedicated to Denise Giardina and the Mountain Party

Ancient mountain resting under primordial sea.
Earth crust cracks in your lunge toward the sun.
Could you foretell your future?
We humans wonder if you think on us.

Earth crust cracks in your lunge toward the sun.
Imagine machines tearing through strata.
We humans wonder if you think on us.
Your boulders become powder, your streams solid.

Imagine machines tearing through strata.
Humans are capable of such cold destruction.
Your boulders become powder, your streams solid.
How easily a mountain is erased?

Humans are capable of such cold destruction.
No shock, no shudder, not a gasp at the sight.
How easily a mountain is erased?
One minute proud, ageless; the next a plain of grass.

No shock, no shudder, not a gasp at the sight.
We close our eyes so as not to see, not to feel.
One minute proud, ageless; the next a plain of grass.
Who is to blame? Who could have halted the devastation?

We close our eyes so as not to see, not to feel.
We daily pass the place you stood.
Who is to blame? Who could have halted the devastation?
Though it hurts every time we think about it.

We daily pass the place you stood.
Enjoying the day until we are forced to remember.
Though it hurts every time we think about it.
Tears that won't flow, a taste we choke on.

Enjoying the day until we are forced to remember.
That change in horizon, a permanent reminder.
Tears that won't flow, a taste we choke on.
We are part of the same human race that destroys.

Could you foretell your future?
Ancient mountain under primordial sea.
That change in horizon, a permanent reminder
We are part of the same human race that destroys.

Your great stone face has been obliterated
By strangers with greed as their motive.
We, who have stood in your shadow,
Continue to search for your soul.
