W.W. Norton published The Unquiet Earth in 1992. It follows events in the lives of families and communities in southern West Virginia from the 1930s Depression to the early 1990s. The Unquiet Earth received an American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation, and the Lillian Smith Award, the oldest literary award in the South.
