Comments on Nader from Susan HaydenApril 30, 2004From the Charleston Gazette: " Mountain Party members must climb over the great divide in the organization Saturday, when as many as 68 delegates meet to decide whether to nominate Ralph Nader as the party’s presidential standard bearer. While the party has two men vying for its gubernatorial nomination — the nominee must receive at least 1 percent of the vote in November for the party to keep its ballot access — the attention is on whether Nader will be nominated. " Nader supports all the issues that are true to my heart, to Gary's, to Frank's, to many of the people I have spent countless hours with during the past few months, trying to organize this convention. We are those that march to a different drum, and have for years. Nader has run in presidential elections for how many years now? In reality where have his efforts, his supporters - you and I - taken us? We are experiencing the destruction of the too few gains that have been slowly won in the fight for enlightened, humane, and just government. Kerry is not the candidate we want, but if the Bush government is continued the results will be disastrous as he will make appointments that will effect the country for the rest of my lifetime, and yours. The Congressional Black Caucus, Howard Dean, and independents and Greens in the majority of states are asking Nader to step down, to have a meaningful dialogue, to work - just this once - within the 2 party system, to stop the Bush regime. We need a national leader to assist us to force the Democrats to address our issues. But, does that take a position on a ballot? No. I have been to the Nader home page. I have seen what he has done since 2000. He has been busy working on OUR ISSUES. Yet, I have to ask if the organizing efforts, and money for a presidential position on the ballot would not be put to better use by organizing a concentrated collaboration with the underserved of the Democratic Party and force a showdown at the Democratic Convention, not at the Mountain Party Convention. My absence at the May 1st Convention, does not mean I can not have a say in this matter. I do have a say. It is what I have been saying for the past weeks, on weekly phone calls. This political party, this convention needs to return it's focus on West Virginia. The Graffitti Newspaper has a "Guide to the Gov's Race" on page 4. What appears is why there is a Mountain Party. On page 6 of this same issue, H.John Rogers, says "regardless of who is inaugurated... we will have the most conservative governor we've have had in the past 75 years...." If the Mountain Party is not destroyed at the Convention, we have the opportunity to work toward stopping that at the election polls. I say "Why not the Mountain Gubernatorial Candidate - whether it be Jesse or Bob Henry? Why not, if Jessie Ventura, Arnold Schwarzenegger, or yes, George W. Bush can be governors, why not the Mountain Party candidate. It's almost like Martin Luther King's I Have a Dream speech. But, it won't happen if May 1st is the scene of anything that resembles the battles on Monday evenings on our conference calls. Peace, | |
