Press ReleaseMarch 4, 2002The Mountain Party will hold a news conference Monday, March 4th at 11:00 AM Place: The new conference room in the WV Secretary of State's office, state capitol Present for this news conference will be Party leaders, candidate(s) and others. The Mountain Party Further information contact: Mountain Party Candidates Announces its Nominating Convention and Candidate's Support of Truck Weight EnforcementThe Mountain Party challenges the Democratic and Republican party leadership to join it in asking Governor Wise and the Legislature to enforce existing weight limits on trucks using the public highways of the state, including increasing the penalties for violations and holding shippers and receivers of overweight loads liable. "Overweight trucks are killing our people, pulverizing our roads and bridges and contributing to an atmosphere of lawlessness and official complicity with this lawlessness", said Mountain Party treasurer Frank Young. "The Mountain Party herein asks the Democratic and Republican Party leadership to join in asking the Wise administration and legislative leadership to end this widely flaunted travesty of openly violating laws designed to save lives and protect the public investment in roads and bridges", Young added. "What About Bob?" asked Mountain Party Convenor, Gary Zuckett, "What we need now is leadership from the governor's mansion. If this legislature fails to fix the coal truck problem our governor has the power to call a special session. How many more citizens must die before the state makes coal haulers obey the law?" "The industry has tried to make this an issue of economics saying they need higher weight limits to maintain present jobs. If jobs are truly the issue, shippers can run three shifts of legal loads instead of one shift of loads double or triple the legal limit of 80,000 pounds, thus providing more jobs," said Donna Halstead, Mountain Party candidate for House of Delegates and President of Citizens For Road Safety. Zuckett added, "The Mountain Party is holding a state-wide nominating convention in Charleston on April 27th. Not only will this save the counties tens of thousands of dollars in printing costs but also it will allow us to meet face-to-face with new candidates like Ms Halsted. As a new party spread out over a wide state, this is critical to party building". "At that time we will select our candidates for the fall elections. We are seeking a merger with the other fastest growing party in West Virginia, the Independents. In fact, we are actively seeking registered Independents who are interested in funning for office on the Mountain Party ticket", Zuckett concluded. That's All Folks! | |||||||||||||||||
