“Our 2002 candidates are a collection of independent-minded citizens
presenting an alternative to ‘politics as usual’”, commented
Denise Giardina, the Party’s 2000 candidate for governor, presented the
Convention’s keynote address. “As a Mountain Party candidate, I was free to
speak my mind with out checking in with the party bosses.” Giardina stated.
“Running as a Democrat or Republican is like running with a ball and chain,”
Denise added. Giardina wrapped up her comments saying she was looking forward to
reading in the post-election paper that Mountain Party candidates had won
office.
In addition to candidate nominations, the Convention ratified a party
platform that includes provisions on: Protection of our air, water and land; Election law reform; Corporate
Accountability; Economic Fairness; Education; Universal Health Care; Democratic
Government; Tax Reform; Gambling only by citizen referendum; and Fair Trade - not Free trade.
“This convention sets the stage for the Mountain Party to move into the fall elections this year and begin preparations for the gubernatorial elections in 2004,” Zuckett reflected.
