Press ReleaseJune 5, 2011 Baber Calls for Single Districts Bob Henry Baber, Mountain Party candidate for Governor, called today for the implementation of single districts throughout West Virginia. “The multi-district ‘gerry-mandering’ of state delegate and senatorial districts is an archaic structure from a corrupt past that is undemocratic in principle and that undermines the “one-person-one vote” right of all West Virginians. Up until this very day we’ve had Republicans and Democrats alike, while apparently arguing for ‘the good of the people’, carving up the legislative pie according to what best suits a two-party system that is clearly broken. This leaves substantial numbers of West Virginians without real representation. That’s not democracy, its political indecency. Furthermore, this self-serving behavior by both parties is a disservice to the common voter. Both the Democrats and Republicans, according to whomever is in power at the moment, have feathered their own nest by drawing districts that ensure their candidates will have unfair advantage over any competitors—especially third party and independent candidates. ‘It’s their party, and they’ll cry if they want to,’ but nobody else will be allowed to cry foul if they perpetuate the current system,” Baber stated. He added, “As mayor of Richwood I saw that we were placed in a distant district in which we had little influence over the outcome of the election, and little opportunity to have out needs fairly represented at the capitol. Our experience, unfortunately, is all too prevalent today throughout our state, and must change. The people have stated their wishes for single districts, but will the Democrats, Republicans, and the acting Governor have the courage to do the right thing? That remains to be seen.” For more information contact: Eric MaLaughlin or Mike Ross or Bob Henry Baber at mayorbobhenrybaber@yahoo.com or 304-462-0320 |
